Summary

Victory Gardens is proud to present Anna in the Tropics, winner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2003 ATCA-Steinberg Award. National attention will be focused on this powerful play by acclaimed Cuban-American playwright Nilo Cruz. Set in the sultry heat of 1920’s Ybor City, Florida, Anna in the Tropics depicts the struggles and loves of the Cuban-Americans who spent hour after steamy hour turning tobacco leaves into something sublime. Cruz imagines the catalytic effect the arrival of a new “lector,” who reads Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina to the workers as they toil in the cigar factory, has on the members of a Cuban-American family. Cruz celebrates the search for identity in a new land.
