Summary

After 15 years of trying unsuccessfuly to conceive a child, Henry and Jean, married middle-class professionals, commit to adopting an infant to be born to Emma, a young unwed mother. The child, a boy named Robin, is badly brain damaged at birth, with little chance for survival; but Jean, her mothering instinct unleashed, clings to him with daily, obsessive visits to the hospital, convincing herself that, with the aid of her love and care, a miracle will happen. Henry, however, begs her to let go. Having survived a hellish cancer operation, he knows the pain of being totally debilitated, and he wants none of that pain for the child, or the consequent anguish for him and Jean.
