Marcelle McVay to Depart Victory Gardens this Fall

Following is the text of recent letter to subscribers, in which long-time Managing Director Marcelle McVay announced her intention to leave the theater this fall to pursue a new career "post Victory Gardens":

August 8, 2008

Dear Friend,

As a subscriber of Victory Gardens Theater, I wanted to let you know that I will be leaving the theater this fall. I have worked at Victory Gardens for almost my entire working life. In many ways, the theater has been my life and many of you have been like family to me! Thank you for your support of Victory Gardens and of me personally over those years.

I have long planned to have a new career “post Victory Gardens.” With the next ten years of my working life, I hope to make a contribution in education, human services or possibly grant making. Over the last year, it became apparent that if I am going to embark on a new project, I better get started!

My partner in life and work, Dennis Zacek, will continue to lead Victory Gardens as Artistic Director with his long time associate, Sandy Shinner. The Board of Directors has formed a search committee to be chaired by Hal Pendexter, a retired executive with USG. Dennis will also serve on the search committee. I am sure that a strong candidate will emerge who will have the support of the board and the staff.

For me, Victory Gardens will be a hard act to follow. I will continue to support the theater in any way I can. Likewise, Victory Gardens will need you more than ever. As a subscriber who understands the mission of developing new plays and playwrights, please be our voice in your community encouraging friends, family, neighbors, and professional colleagues to join us in the joys and challenges of becoming an American Center for New Plays at the Biograph.

With great affection,

Marcelle McVay
