The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago Sones de Mexico Ensemble Chicago
The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago (MFDC) and double GRAMMY®
nominated Sones de Mexico Ensemble Chicago
will present a spectacular show of regional Mexican dance and music on Saturday
May 17, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday May 18, 2:00 p.m.
MFDC is the oldest Mexican dance company in Chicago. It has performed for presidents
Reagan, Clinton, Mexican president Vicente Fox and vice president Bush. It has
appeared with Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlan and with Pepe Aguilar. It has
toured Mexico where it
received rave reviews and in 2007 was chosen to perform at the largest Irish
Folk Festival in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, just south of Dublin.
Sones has been nominated for a 2007 Latin GRAMMY®, a 2008 GRAMMY® and for
a North American Folk Music & Dance Alliance Award for Best World Music
Artist. The nominations were for its hit song “Esta Tierra es Tuya”; a Spanish
version of Woodie Guthrie’s “This Land is Your land”.
The song's Spanish words are as relevant today as the English words were
seven decades ago. Today the Spanish words touch on the immigration dilemma
The event is partially sponsored by a grant from the Illinois Arts
Council.
