You use a hammer to drive in a nail but would you use it to saw wood? Of course not! Then why would you use the same acting technique for every play? Different scripts call for different approaches. This class is based on the book by David Kaplan and delves into five distinct approaches to acting. Each 8-week class session explores two approaches. Scenes are chosen from a wide variety of playwrights such as Chekhov, Ionesco, Lorca, Coward, Mamet and Shephard. The approaches are actively applied in class, so outside rehearsal is not necessary. Students learn to record and repeat their work. They also learn how to incorporate and combine approaches that enliven and enrich not only their class work, but their audition and rehearsal scripts as well.
