Scenic Charge Artist

Victory Gardens Theater is seeking a self-motivated & qualified Scenic Charge Artist for the remainder of our season. Applicants should have 5 years relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Scenic Artist will work closely with scenic designers and in house production staff to effectively and accurately translate paint elevations onto completed scenery, soft goods, and props. Scenic Charge Artist will be responsible for oversight of schedules, inventory, equipment, and occasional overhire labor for the season.

Duties include:

  • Creating samples for approval by Scenic designers and the Artistic Director
  • Mixing all color
  • Paint and surface treatment on all scenic elements
  • Carving or otherwise sculpting scenic elements such as stone, tree bark, etc.
  • All necessary surface texturing
  • Applying protective coatings where necessary
  • Supervising additional staff of professionals as needed
  • Maintaining the safety, order, and cleanliness of all paint areas
  • Maintaining all paint equipment
  • Instructing technical staff, stage management and running crew in the proper care and maintenance of finished surfaces.
  • Creating a touchup kit for use during the run of the show
  • Attending ¬†production meetings/design meetings as needed

The next paint call dates are as follows; 3/12 -3/14 and 3/26 – 3/28


Applicants must have an extensive knowledge of scenic painting techniques and surface treatments including carving, texturing, ageing, and distressing. Ideal candidate is a self-motivated, safety conscious, team player with at least 5 years relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants must be a member of United Scenic Artist Local #829 for consideration.

Board Programmer

Victory Gardens Theater is looking for a Board Programmer for our upcoming show, An Issue of Blood. The Board programmer attends all lighting and technical rehearsals (listed below), programs the lighting cues to the satisfaction of the LD with our ETC Element Lighting console and assists the Stage Manager or Master Electrician with dimmer/focus checks.

1st Tech: March 31st – 2:00pm-10:30pm

2nd Tech: April 1st – 11:00am-11:00pm

3rd Tech: April 2nd 2:00pm-10:30pm

Stage Management Intern

We’re always looking for Stage Management Interns. terns will assist the production stage manager for the duration of the rehearsal process as well as the run of the show. Interns will interact with directors, designers, as well as members of the administrative staff. In addition, interns will learn the skills necessary to maintain day-to-day operation of the technical departments of the theater. Interns must have a strong, varied background of technical theater and experience in stage management. Contact Monty Cole, Artistic Programs Manager, at for more information.

Play Submissions

Victory Gardens Theater accepts full-length scripts year-round from literary agents and theater professionals with whom we have an existing professional relationship. Mailed copies of scripts are welcomed, though we encourage electronic pdf or word doc submissions if at all possible. A member of the Literary department will respond to submissions once they have been read and processed.

Production Casting

Victory Gardens maintains a data base of actors. We keep a file of the photos and resumes of actors who have worked at and/or auditioned for the theatre in the past five years.

Out of Town Actors

Victory Gardens is only interested in auditioning actors who plan to relocate to Chicago in the near future. Our mission is to provide jobs for Chicago theater artists. If you are an Equity actor visiting from out of town and are planning on relocating, you are welcome to request an audition appointment by e-mail or inquiry letter. Auditions are scheduled on a time-available basis. There may be times that we are not able to accommodate an audition, but we will do our best.
